200-euro one-off payment for students

Dear students,

To financially support students who have been enrolled at a university in Germany (reference date: 1 December 2022), the federal law on the energy price lump sum payment for students (EPPSG) came into force on 21 December 2022. Eligible persons (students, doctoral researchers, international students as well as students on leave of absence) may apply for the one-time payment of € 200, starting from March 15 at the earliest and until September 30, 2023 at the latest (cut-off-date). Guest auditors and guest students, however, are not eligible to apply. Important: applicants must have had their permanent residence or habitual residence in Germany on 1 December 2022. This means that students who have their residence abroad – for example in Luxembourg – unfortunately are not eligible.

For more detailed information, please see the FAQs or the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) website (in German).

Step 1: Set up a BundID account

Eligible students must first create a BundID account. You cannot request the payment without this account.

There are four options of BundID accounts:

  • High trust level: authentication through online ID function (new ID cards) or electronic residence permit, the European eID or a personal ELSTER certificate.
  • Low trust level: registration with user name, password and email address.

Step 2: Retrieve legitimation data via PORTA

A list of all students enrolled at Trier University on December 1, 2022 and legally entitled to the payment were sent once in encrypted form to the responsible Landesamt für Ausbildungsförderung (state office for educational assistance).

We provide our students with the individual data required in PORTA and for the central payment request portal. Please log into PORTA as usual. You will find the required "access code or key" directly on your start page. The "PIN" (personal identification number), which may also be required, is provided via a separate PDF report, which you can find here: "My studies/Study service" >"Reports". Please check your PORTA account regularly for this information.

Depending which of the options of BundID accounts you have chosen in step 1, you need either the supplementary "access code or key" (= type 1) or the "access code or key" with "PIN" (= type 2) to request your payment.

Former students who were still enrolled on December 1, 2022 but who have been exmatriculated (e.g. as of March 31, 2023), will still to have access to PORTA and the required information for a maximum of 60 days afterwards, starting from the day the exmatriculation takes legal effect. Examples: If you have already been exmatriculated with effect from 01.02.2023, you will still have access to PORTA until 02.04.2023 at the latest, and if you have been exmatriculated with legal effect from 31.03.2023, until 30.05.2023 at the latest, etc. Recommendation: Please save your application data soon and do not wait until the last possible day.

Step 3: Request the 200-euro one-time payment

Application is done via the payment request portal www.einmalzahlung200.de (in German) starting on March 15 until September 30, 2023 at the latest. There is no other way to request the payment. You can reach the free hotline: +49 800 2623 003. Please note that this service is only available in German only. You can also ask questions via a contact form.

The University of Trier is not directly involved in this application process and not responsible neither for the application nor for the payment. Consequently, we cannot inform you about the status of your application.
