Measurement of sexual desire

What is it about?

Sex hormones, primarily estradiol and progesterone in women, play an important role in our physical and mental health as well as in our overall experience and behavior. In order to accurately record and interpret these effects, it is essential to be able to determine hormone levels as precisely as possible. Saliva samples are often used for this purpose, as they are easy to collect and have no side effects for test subjects. However, the accuracy of these measurements is debated and still under-researched, especially when it comes to reflecting fluctuations within the menstrual cycle. In this study, we therefore want to systematically test the accuracy of saliva measurements by comparing the values with the results of blood samples. This study is being conducted in cooperation with the Department of Gynecology at the Mutterhaus Clinic in Trier.

Who can participate?

Healthy female subjects with a regular menstrual cycle between 25 and 35 days. In addition, you should not be using hormonal contraception (birth control pill, hormonal IUD, etc.) and should not be taking any other regular medication.

How does the study work?

The study consists of two testing dates, one in the first half and one in the second half of the menstrual cycle. In order to determine these days as accurately as possible, we will ask you in advance to inform us of the start and end dates of your previous cycles. We will also send you a short questionnaire to check the inclusion criteria and assess your physical and mental health.

The testing will take place at our premises at Johanniterufer 15 and will last one hour. During this time, medical staff from the parent company will take a venous blood sample from you. If you have any questions, you can contact this person or the additional experiment supervisor at any time. Afterwards, three saliva samples will be taken at 30-minute intervals and you will be asked to fill out short questionnaires about your current state of health.
