The Fulbright Transatlantic Diplomacy (TAD) program is a funding opportunity of Fulbright Germany for students of the Masters of International Relations and Diplomacy, which combines a coordinated study program in the USA with leadership development, further professional education and long-term network building.
In Short:
- Who can apply: German citizens who are already enrolled in the Master’s program in International Relations and Diplomacy.
- Application deadline: Students in the Master’s program in International Relations and Diplomacy may apply by September 27, 2026.
- Duration of stay: 4 or 9 months in the U.S. during the fall semester of 2027 (beginning in August/September)
- What is covered: Fulbright Germany provides funding for living expenses in the amount of $13,800 for four months or $31,000 for nine months, as well as any applicable fees incurred upon enrollment at the U.S. partner university.
- No U.S. tuition fees for TAD participants
- Participation in the Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE) (please check in advance which U.S. partner universities accept the ASPE insurance policy).
- A J-1 visa is issued free of charge.

Preparation and networking seminar from April 22 to 25, 2027, in Berlin as part of the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of Fulbright Germany.
- Good to know: It is generally possible to combine this scholarship with other scholarships, provided they do not serve the same purpose (covering living expenses).

You will need the following documents:
- Resume / Curriculum Vitae (in English, max. 2 pages)
- A current and complete overview of your academic record to date (Transcript of Records) and a certificate of enrollment in the Master’s program in International Relations and Diplomacy (LINK: www.uni-trier.de/studium/beratung-service/service/online-dienste/porta/erklaer-mir-porta/porta-bescheinigungen-anzeigen) in German or English, preferably including a ranking certificate from the Registrar’s Office.
- Bachelor’s degree certificate, if applicable
- High school diploma / university entrance qualification
- Two letters of recommendation from university faculty members with a Ph.D. (Please request these early or in a timely manner!)
Fulbright Germany is expected to notify selected candidates in mid-December 2026.
At the latest upon receiving an acceptance from Fulbright Germany, we recommend contacting the academic advising office to coordinate your study plan or learning agreement.
