The CIRKLA certificate

The “CIRKLA Certificate” provides comprehensive, cross-sector knowledge of the circular economy. By participating in various courses throughout the Greater Region, students can expand their knowledge and develop specific skills in this field. The circular economy plays a crucial role in ensuring a sustainable future, as it conserves resources, reduces waste, and contributes to the development of innovative, environmentally friendly economic models. The certificate serves as official proof of the competencies acquired and strengthens one’s position in the international job market.
The “CIRKLA Certificate” offers students the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the circular economy and acquire valuable skills for their future careers. The “CIRKLA Certificate” is part of the UniGR-CIRKLA project, which is funded by the Interreg VI A Greater Region program (2021–2027).
The required course “Circular Entrepreneurship” is a fully digital module that teaches the importance and fundamentals of the circular economy in entrepreneurship. Here, students learn how to develop sustainable business models and use resources efficiently.
In addition, the certificate offers maximum flexibility: Students can choose from various modules to deepen their knowledge in specific areas. Whether it’s entrepreneurship, metallurgy, materials science, or other specialized fields—courses are offered both at their home university and at at least one European UniGR partner university.
The “CIRKLA Certificate” consists of at least 15 ECTS credits.
The corresponding courses are regular offerings on the circular economy provided each semester by the University of Trier and the UniGR partner universities. Students can select various courses from the course catalogs of the University of Trier and the UniGR partner universities (see below) based on their individual interests, thereby qualifying themselves for the international, cross-border job market.

Enrollment at a UniGR Partner University (outgoing)
The enrollment and course registration processes may vary slightly at each UniGR partner university.
Students at the University of Trier who wish to take courses at other UniGR partner universities as part of the “CIRKLA Certificate” program must apply for UniGR student status at the respective partner university and then register for the relevant courses.
If students have questions about enrollment through UniGR, they can contact the designated representative (contact information in the upper right corner). However, it is recommended that they first consult the following information pages, which describe the exact procedure:

You will also find the contact information for the UniGR coordinators at the respective partner universities there. If you have specific questions about a partner university, it is advisable to contact the relevant person there directly.

Modules completed at one of the other UniGR universities must be recognized by the CIRKLA Certificate Coordinator. The modules are recognized upon the student’s request.
Enrollment at the University of Trier (incoming)
- Students from other UniGR universities must enroll at the University of Trier using their UniGR student status and then register for the courses they wish to take.
- Select a course from the University of Trier catalog via PORTA
- Check with your home university to see if a Learning Agreement is required. Enroll online via PORTA—please note the application deadlines:
- Winter semester (September 15 of the year)
- Summer semester (February 28 (29) of the year).
- Once the enrollment process is complete, you will receive an email address that you can use to register for the course.
- For UniGR students, exam registration takes place directly with the course instructors.
- We recommend clarifying the exam and registration details (registration deadline, date, format, scope, and duration of the exam, as well as other formalities) early on and in person with the instructor of the respective course to avoid misunderstandings.
