Important information on withdrawal from examination

There are different ways of withdrawing from an exam, which you will find below. If you have any questions, please contact the University Examination Office as early as possible so that you do not miss any important deadlines.

Withdrawal from an examination without stating the reasons

Students can withdraw from exams, open-book exams and oral exams in PORTA up until 12 am on the 7th day before the exam. For all other forms of examination, withdrawal is possible up to one day before the examination without giving reasons. This form of withdrawal does not lead to an obligation to repeat the exam. The exam is deemed not to have been taken.

If the student is obliged to repeat the exam due to a previous attempt, this does of course not come into effect. In this case, the examination would be taken with a 5.0 due to not being able to repeat it in time.

Wirthdrawal due to illness

If the deadline for withdrawal has expired without giving reasons, withdrawal can only be done due to inability to take the examination due to illness. There are a few important points to note here:

The student must submit a medical certificate to the university examination office. Please use our PDF-template. This can be done by email to the person responsible or to pruefunguni-trierde. The medical certificate must be submitted to the university examination office immediately, no later than the third day after the examination. A retrospective attestation is not possible! Example: Your exam is to take place on 10.02. The medical certificate must have been issued at this date at the latest. If a medical certificate is submitted, issued on 11.02., this will not be accepted, even if it was issued retrospectively for 10.02.

If a student is to withdraw from the exam a second time, the certificate must contain information on the time, type, extent and duration of the illness and its effects on the ability to take the exam. Since the examinee is responsible of proof for the reasons presented, he must release the doctor treating him from the duty of confidentiality. The attending doctor himself cannot invoke any confidentiality he may be entitled to. Both the state data protection officer for Rhineland-Palatinate with regard to personal data protection and the state medical association of Rhineland-Palatinate with regard to the doctor's confidentiality have confirmed the requirements of the University of Trier for proof of inability to take an examination due to illness.

If the inability to take the examination is recognized by the university examination office they will mark the withdrawal due to illness in PORTA.
Please note that if you withdraw due to illness, you are obliged to repeat the course at the next possible date!

Find out about the next date soon and register for the exam in PORTA, otherwise the exam will be considered failed if you do not repeat it in time.

Withdrawal after examination has started

A withdrawal after the start of the examination is not accepted in most cases. At the beginning of the examination, a student declares that he or she is fit to take the examination. Up to this point, the withdrawal mentioned in point 2 "due to illness" is possible at any time.

From the second withdrawal due to illness, the certificate must contain information on the time, nature, extent and duration of the illness as well as its effects on the ability to take the examination.

If you withdraw from the examination due to a medical certificate, you must take the examination again at the next possible date. Please note that there is no automatic registration!

The risk of abuse in the event of withdrawal after the start or end of the exam is unfortunately very high. There is a risk of a student taking the exam, but noticing that this could probably lead to a negative exam result, and withdrawing during or after the exam to get another chance. While in an oral examination or based on the questions in a written exam a student gets the opportunity to make a prognosis about the result of the examination. If a withdrawal was acceptet at this point it would null the principle of equal opportunity for all students.

The student must prove that during the examination he/she was not able to take the examination but which could not be recognized before the examination began. The student who knows that he/she may be ill and unable to take an examination is obliged to clarify whether the ability to perform is significantly impaired by illness and, if so, to withdraw from the examination before it begins, but in any case not to participate. The recognition of a withdrawal after the start of the examination is possible if, in addition to the diagnosis, a statement is made about the degree of development of the disease, which makes it possible to assess whether the student knew the disease and therefore took part in the examination speculatively or based on it should have known about the obligation to cooperate.

There is an obligation to repeat the test at the next possible date here as well.
