Welcome to the Department of Physical Geography

Physical Geographyis a sub-discipline of two much larger fields of study - Geography and Earth Sciences. The main purpose of Physical Geography is to explain the spatial characteristics of the various natural phenomena and processes associated with the Earth's hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and lithosphere. The processes determine structures, functions and dynamics of landscapes and natural environment as well as human activities in those landscapes by land use, settlements, transportation routes etc.

Physical geography emphasizes the processes and forces that take effects on the earth's surface and the interaction between the environment and the humans living within that environment. Physical geography includes examination of the areas of meteorology, climatology, biogeography, pedology, and geomorphology.

In addition, the students get to know the varied tasks of the physical geography in the applied area. The essential purpose of the education is among other things the ability in the management of a sustainable use and development of the living space earth.
