Screen1900

This website offers an overview on the manifold activities of the research focus Screen1900 in the Department of Media Studies, at the University of Trier, since the year 2000. Screen1900 deals with the emerging and establishing screen culture of the 19th and early 20th century: the art of projection and early cinema.

Preparatory work has been pursued during the 1990s in the context of KINtop, the German yearbook on early film, and in collaborative magic lantern and early film performances with illuminago. In the year 2000, Screen1900 started with the first research project on the history of non-fiction film in Germany from 1895 to 1918. Up to now, three research projects on the art of projection followed as well as international conferences, dvd editions, database projects and experimental media archaeology projects.  The members of Screen1900 collaborate to advance knowledge, experience and access in the research field of early screen culture.
