Registering your place of residence with the Resident Registration Office of Trier

If you are an international scholar who wants to stay longer than 3 months in Trier, you are obliged to register with state authorities. This is not necessary if you are staying for less than 3 months. However, if you need a tax ID and/ or want to open a bank account, a registration certificate is required.

Registering your of place of residence in Trier

Your registration with the state authorities (Bürgeramt) in Trier must be done within two weeks of moving into your accommodation. You can make an appointment for the registration of your residence online or by calling the public administration customer service umber 115.

Required documents

For your appointment, you need the following documents:

Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (proof of residence)
ID or passport
if you are bringing your spouse: marriage certificate
if you are bringing your children: birth certificates
(Note: In the case of foreign marriage and birth certificates, a translation by a state-approved translator or a state-approved translator is required. Certificate(s) and translation must be presented in the original.)
