Local Information
Trier
Trier is the oldest city in Germany and renowned both for its Roman monuments (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and its beautiful location in the Moselle valley. Founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC it was once one of the five largest cities in the known world and a capital of the Roman empire during the reign of Constantine I. Today, Trier is part of the Greater Region Saar-Lor-Lux, which also includes nearby Luxembourg (another UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the bordering regions of France. Luxembourg and the French cities of Strasbourg (yet another World Heritage Site) and Metz are nearby and can be explored in a day-trip. Trips to the surrounding country site with its vineyards, castles and idyllic towns are also very worthwhile.
