eLearning Project

Implementation of an eLearning strategy

The eLearning project has the objective of creating an additional learning opportunity for students in their basic education.

Especially in subjects like mathematics and statistics an ongoing learning process, which  is accompanying the lecture, is crucial for good performance. In particular, calculation methods and interrelations are continually repeated, so that they can be memorized. Without a review of the learning outcomes, students have, however, no orientation on their learning progress. Thus, weekly exercise sheets, which are returned corrected, would be ideal in combination with the ongoing tutorials. Unfortunately, such corrections cannot be supplied due to the high number of students. At this point the e-learning project is applied. In this project an automation of different types of tasks, which can then be incorporated in the form of tests and learning modules in an online learning platform, is carried out. This allows virtually unlimited different task settings. Subsequently, the student receives a feedback from the system on his achievements in these online tasks, and thus, can control his learning progress permanently.

The used learning platform ILIAS supports many types of questions (numerical questions, allocationd and classification issues, image maps, single-/multiple-choice, etc). By means of the statistic software R tasks are created automated and recorded in a format that is supported by the ILIAS-import. The tasks include amongst others randomly generated hypothesis testing, interpretation of graphics and the computation of numerical examples.

A first implementation was carried out as part of the basic education in the winter semester 2010/2011 and will be available in the coming semesters as well.

This project is supported by the Nikolaus Koch Foundation since 10-01-2011.
