Profile

Professor Dr. Winfried Thaa, born in 1952, was Professor of Political Theory and History of Political Ideas at the University of Trier from 2002 to 2017. He studied political science, philosophy and German language and literature at the University of Tübingen and the Bologna Center at Johns Hopkins University. He earned a PhD at the University of Tübingen in 1982 with a thesis on "Herrschaft als Versachlichung." In 1995 he habilitated at the University of Tübingen with the thesis "Die Wiedergeburt des Politischen. Zivilgesellschaft und Legitimitätskonflikt in den Revolutionen von 1989".
He held teaching positions at the universities of Tübingen, Denver (Colorado), Ann Arbor (Michigan) and Bologna. From 2004-2012, he directed the project "Formen und Funktionsweisen politischer Repräsentation von Fremden und Armen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland“ within the research programm SFB 600 “Fremdheit und Armut“.
