Simulation of topography-induced convection in the COPS area (STICCA)

Projektleitung : Günther Heinemann
Mitarbeiter : Jochen Stadler
Projektlaufzeit : 2006-2008
Schwerpunkt : This research project focuses on high-resolution simulations of the initiation of convection in the area of the planned experiment COPS of the priority programme. The mail goal is to examine the influence of the orography and surface conditions associated with the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura for the convection. The simulations will be performed using the three-dimensional non-hydrostatic model FOOT3DK, which is run for idealized studies as well as for realistic studies being nested in the operational forecast model of the DWD (local model, LM). FOOT3DK simulations will be down to a convection-resolving resolution (i.e. 1km and less). Beside process studies, the project will participate in the numerical experiments of the short-range forecast (FC-COPS) and the virtual reality VR-COPS experiment, providing high-resolution virtual measurements for the COPS experimental design for a period of several weeks. The project will contribute to a better understanding of the convection and precipitation dynamics over mesoscale low mountains.
