Roemisches Schiff auf der Mosel

The research focus of the chair and the chair holder, Prof. Dr Christoph Schäfer, is on early Hellenism, particularly in the form of the legitimisation of rule by the successors of Alexander the Great, in the social and economic history of the Roman Republic and Imperial period, in the history of late antiquity up to the migration of peoples and particularly in the history and technique of ancient shipping.

Current Research

In a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the potential and intensity of Roman maritime trade is to be investigated, with particular emphasis on the performance of a reconstructed seagoing merchant ship. The best-preserved wreck of a Roman merchant ship was selected for the reconstruction, which presumably fell victim to a storm in the Bay of Laurons towards the end of the 3rd century AD and sank.
