Nikolaus Koch Foundation continues to support the math circle at Trier University

The math circle was launched at Trier University in 2017. It is an offer for students from the 7th to 13th grade to get to know mathematics outside of school. They can come to the university every two weeks, where topics such as combinatorics, graph theory, number theory or geometry are covered outside of the school curriculum. There is also a digital offer for 7th and 8th graders. During the lessons, new solution strategies are developed and various approaches are discussed, as well as monthly task sheets.

Participation helps students to have more confidence in their own mathematical skills and to apply them better. Some of the participants have achieved outstanding results in competitions such as the Mathematical Olympiad. Another aim of the project is to get pupils interested in mathematics in the long term and thus encourage them to choose a career or study a STEM subject.

Over 100 pupils have already taken advantage of the offer since 2017. The math circle currently has 31 active participants. One reason for its success is the Nikolaus Koch Foundation, which has supported the project from the outset and has now also extended the funding for the years 2024-2028 in the amount of €22,500.

Teachers are welcome to suggest pupils they consider suitable for participation. There is currently more space available, especially in grades 7 and 8.
