Professor Dr Birgit Peters

Prof. Dr. Birgit Peters

Prof. Birgit Peters studied law at the Humboldt University, Berlin, Trier University and King’s College London (Master's degree, LL.M.) with a focus on International and European law. She completed her subject-specific foreign language course in Anglo-American Law at the University of Trier. In 2000, she represented Trier University in the national finals of the Philipp C. Jessup International Law Moot Court.

During her legal clerkship in Hamburg, Prof. Peters worked for the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (representing the Federal Republic of Germany before the European Courts), the European Commission (Directorate-General for Transport) and the Appeals Chamber of the Yugoslav Tribunal.

She completed her doctorate in 2008 on a topic of international law at the Humboldt University, Berlin with Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Christian Tomuschat. After her clerkship, she held post-doctoral positions at the Universities of Oslo (2010-2012), Bremen (2012-2013) and Münster (2012-2015). She then held a junior professorship position in the field of Public law, International law and European law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Rostock (2015-2020). Birgit Peters did her Habilitation in 2020 with a work on "Legitimation Through Public Participation?" at the University of Speyer under Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Karl-Peter Sommermann.
