Workkshop - With Associate Prof. Tafsir Matin Johansson
Law of the Sea and Marine Technology:
Exploring the Frontiers of Public International Law
This workshop introduces students to the evolving relationship between the law of the sea and emerging marine technologies. Beginning with the foundations of international maritime law, participants will explore maritime zones, sovereignty, sovereign rights, and the legal obligations attached to them through practical case studies.
The session will then examine modern marine technologies, including biologging, and their growing impact on public international law. Students will also learn the distinction between maritime and marine technologies and how technological innovation is reshaping legal and institutional frameworks at sea.
Finally, the workshop will address contemporary challenges arising at the intersection of marine technology and the law of the sea—issues currently debated in academia, industry, and international organizations.

Judge Erik Wennerström at the University of Trier
On 16 January, the Chair had the pleasure of welcoming Erik Wennerström, Judge at the European Court of Human Rights, to the Staff Club of the University of Trier. In an open and engaging discussion, he offered valuable insights into the Court’s work, its decision-making processes, and current issues in European human rights protection.
Particular interest was sparked by his reflections on his previous role as a lead negotiator in inter-state disputes. Following the discussion, students took the opportunity to engage in a lively exchange and raised questions on the challenges and future prospects of human rights protection in Europe.
The event provided both in-depth academic perspectives and personal impressions of judicial practice in Strasbourg. The Chair would like to thank Judge Wennerström for his visit and for the inspiring insights into his work.

Sustainability
Trier is going green! Starting next semester, you can get a certificate in sustainability. Sustainability is becoming more and more important, and it's one of the university's top priorities. The certificate program provides students with a fundamental understanding of sustainability and aims to familiarize them with its various facets. At the same time, it offers a unique qualification for their future careers. The certificate is issued by the Department of Law. More information can be found on the Green Office website.
The Civil Service in Europe
Another year, another book. "The Civil Service in Europe" is an open-access book, published by Routledge in January 2025.
This book expands civil service research from a national to a transnational European perspective. It examines the evolving public administration landscape, analyzing historical, social, and political influences. Written by experts across Europe, it integrates legal analysis with insights from public management, political science, and sociology. Key topics include employment systems, digitalization, AI, anti-corruption efforts, and administrative culture. Addressing global challenges like climate change and migration, the book identifies common European standards and offers practical guidance for public service reforms, making it a valuable resource for academics, practitioners, and policymakers.
