The Department of Geobotany is part of the Faculty of Regional and Environmental Sciences. It was established by appointing Prof. Dr. Barbara Ruthsatz to Trier in 1981. Since this time, the department's activities cover a broad range of research into plant and vegetation ecology. Since 2006, Prof. Dr. Frank Thomas is the head of the department. Apl. Prof. Dr. Willy Werner is working at the department since 1988.

Currently, the staff of the Department of Geobotany comprises 13 members, including four scientists, six doctoral students, one secretary and two technical assistants, and a varying number of graduating students working on their Bachelor or Master theses.

Our research activities focus on plant eco-physiology and ecosystems, analysis of vegetation and plant communities, bio-indication and bio-monitoring as well as applied biological conservation.
