Forum Celtic Studies

at Trier University

The Forum Celtic Studies is an interdisciplinary association at the University of Trier, founded in 2006. It integrates and promotes the study of the Celtic cultures from antiquity to modern times in the linguistic, material and cultural fields. To this end, the Forum carries out projects as well as project studies and internships with students and other interested people.

The Forum also organizes regular courses, seminars and workshops and once a semester block courses and workshops to inform members of the University and the general public on interesting and recent work on Celtic research. 

The Forum is linked with colleagues worldwide. On 5–9 August 2013, it organized the First European Symposium in Celtic Studies at the University of Trier, attended by more than 80 speakers from all over Europe. The Symposium was funded by the DFG.

In 2016, the Forum celebrated its tenth anniversary. In recent years, the Forum has focused on questions of semiotics and regional history. An international conference on the cultural semiotics of Celtic cultures took place on 3–4 September 2019, titled Semiotic Approaches in Celtic Studies, supported by the Graduiertenzentrum of the University of Trier (GUT) and the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.

In the near future, an international online conference on the topic of rebellions in Roman Gaul will be prepared. The occasion was the span of 2000 years that had passed in 2021 since the rebellion of Florus and Sacrovir in AD 21.
