Research at Trier University

Transformation, resilience, digitality and diversity: These four cross-disciplinary dimensions act as transversal research perspectives which interconnect the research in and across different fields and disciplines. They shape the university’s profile centred on people and society.

The cross-disciplinary dimensions themselves are linked by overarching topics: culture, media, knowledge; cognition, action, profession; communication, variation, modality; norms, systems, structures; complexity, insecurity, modelling; space, environment, resources.

These overarching topics establish a framework, where scholars, following their individual interests and applying their expertise, develop interdisciplinary research perspectives and consolidate common focus areas.

Areas of joint research refer to research institutions within the faculties, cross-faculty research centres, third-party funded research groups, such as Research Units, Priority Programmes and Research Training Groups, as well as EU actions and research projects funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Research Initiative 2024-2028.

The University supports research projects via numerous funding programmes: amongst others, to support the preparation of third-party funded individual research projects (Research Fund), to support qualification projects during doctoral studies and at the postdoctoral stage, as well as to provide funding for scientific events.

Furthermore, within the framework of the Rhineland-Palatinate Research Initiative 2024-2028, Trier University has created two funding programmes to support the development of new research groups:

Strategic Research Fund I: start-up funding for new research ideas for collaborative research projects (funding volume up to 10.000 €)

Eligible for professors (junior professors with tenure track included). Applications can be submitted any time. Funding decisions are expected four times a year (in February, April, June and October).

Strategic Research Fund II: start-up funding for the development of applications for collaborative research projects within the university‘s internal competition

The selection of research projects will be made through a university-internal competition, and in accordance with the procedure established in 2022/2023.

Funded projects:

The Research Support Office assists researchers in implementing their research projects and offers specific information and guidance for researchers in early career phases. We provide information about current funding opportunities by funding institutions (e.g. German Research Foundation and other foundations), the European Union, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate and Trier University, and help researchers find funding programmes tailored to their individual needs. Our team provides assistance for the proposal preparation as well as during the project’s implementation phase. To this end, we coordinate with other units including the university management and with external cooperation partners.

The Nikolaus Koch Foundation funds early, school and vocational education as well as professional development in the Trier region. It supports, amongst others, schools, Trier University, the Trier University of Applied Sciences.
