Research interests
In my research, I focus on the diversity of individual differences among players, both in digital games and in tabletop role-playing games. I am interested in topics such as the design of virtual and analog characters, the decision-making processes during (role-playing) games, the subjective player experience and the various motivational factors that influence engagement in these worlds.
In addition to digital games, I am particularly investigating the unique potential of tabletop role-playing games. Due to their flexibility and freedom of interpretation, they offer opportunities to shape gaming experiences even more freely and to promote personal development, which could otherwise be limited by the programmatic boundaries of digital games.
Another focus of my work is on social interaction and collaboration in virtual and analog game worlds. I am interested in how people interact and collaborate in these settings and how these dynamic forms of interaction can have a positive impact on the experience and development of participants.
