Research topics at the chair for medieval history include the history of information; political and economic thought in Europe in the 14th-16th centuries; Italian municipal history; theories, methods and perspectives of history; Nicholas of Cusa, and cultural heritage. These topics are connected with one another by overarching questions and geographical areas of focus. Introduction

The introduction of writing in the 12th century was accompanied by changes in thought and behaviour. Information increased in importance as it was used to document past or present situations, in order to reach judgements or decisions for the future. Researchers at the chair of medieval history take this development into consideration, examine the conditions for trust in oral and written statements, and address the demand for authenticity, credibility, truth and transparency. They trace strategies of information production, analyse forms of information processing, and consider the conditions of information interpretation. The term "information" was used not only to describe the expansion of a personal or institutional field of view, but also to denote the instruction and education of people. In this way this research area is connected to political and economic intellectual history.

Introduction

Political and economic thought in Europe in the 14th to 16th century is analysed at the chair on the basis of virtue ethical treatises. Authors, recipients and translators responded to conditions at courts and in cities, interpreted them within the bounds of their own knowledge and experience, and attempted to use this "information" to exert instructive, legitimising or reformatory influence. For a long time, these writings were considered to be of little significance due to their supposed lack of originality and removal from reality. However, actor-centred research into the documents contributes to a deeper understanding of intellectual history and to a nuanced understanding of historical values in Europe. Projects at the chair for medieval history are distinguished by the fact that they are transdisciplinary and examine philosophical, theological and legal texts, administrative records, normative texts, literature and art alongside the treatises themselves.

Introduction

Italian municipal history encompasses the development of distinct city cultures. Hope for peace, security and prosperity manifested itself in various social, economic and political regulations, in the distribution of burdens and honours, and a specific way of handling informational assymetries. Recent research at the chair for medieval history has focussed on the Republic of Venice in the 14th and 15th centuries and her constitution between myth and reality.

Introduction

Beyond working with historical sources, critical analysis of medieval history involves scrutinising traditional certainties of research, being aware of one's own time and location, and developing innovative approaches. This is a challenge which researchers at the chair of medieval history and the Cusanus Institute consider with every new research topic.

Introduction

At the chair and at the Cusanus Institute, Nicholas of Cusa is contemplated as a person of the 15th century who recognised the complexity, diversity, the potential for conflict and simultaneously the innovative capacity of his time. He grappled with these phenomenons not only intellectually, but also in everyday life. From this fundamental premise, researchers develop new approaches to the life and works of Nicholas of Cusa and discuss these ideas on a transdisciplinary level with colleagues around the world. One of our central undertakings is the digitalisation, indexing and academic interpretation of the Cusanus Bibliothek.

Introduction

Working in close co-operation with the Cusanus Society and the St. Nikolaus Hospital/Cusanusstift, researchers at the Chair of Medieval History and the Cusanus Institute are dedicated to the preservation of the internationally-recognised cultural heritage of the region. Bernkastel-Kues receives special attention as the location of the birthplace of Nicholas of Cusa, the St. Nikolaus Hospital/Cusanusstift and the Cusanus Library. Here the intertwining of local, European and global history is particularly apparent.
