INWEND: Intelligent Knowledge-Based Decision Support for Legal Issues Demonstrated in the Field of Data Protection Law

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a key technology that is rapidly gaining importance in business, administration and increasingly also in science. The diverse methods of AI offer the opportunity to support knowledge-intensive activities in many fields fundamentally and even to revolutionize them. Currently approaches for AI-based support of processes in the field of legal activities are being discussed under the keyword “Legal Tech"; but research on this topic is still in its infancy in Germany.

In a data-driven information society, personal data are processed daily and the requirements of the Basic Data Protection Regulation (DSGVO) has to be observed. Therefore, data processors have to make balancing decisions regularly. Legal laymen - the vast majority of data processors – are often not in a position to do so. Therefore, either an examination of the legal situation or the data processing is omitted. Both are socially undesirable.

In this project, we will investigate to what extent new methods of artificial intelligence can support the everyday decision-making processes in data protection law. For this purpose, a knowledge-based system is to be designed and prototypically implemented in the form of a pilot study, which is able to make appropriate recommendations on specific issues of data protection law in a limited sub-area of the field of law.
