Podcast "Treveris ex urbe" - Universitätsgeschichten / Episode 9 (with Stephan Laux)

To mark the 550th anniversary of the founding of the Old University of Trier in 2023, former University President Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Jäckel launched a podcast series on the university’s history, with new episodes every two weeks.

In Episode 9, guest Stephan Laux discusses the topic „... bald in einem blühernden Zustande als je.“ Denkschriften, Pläne, Wiedergründungsversuche nach 1815. The title quotes a memorandum from 1815 and the interview explores how the 172-year interruption of the university’s tradition should be understood. Was the loss of the Old University a recurring theme during that period? Who articulated demands for its revival, and in what form? Stephan Laux offers a broad analysis of the context and the significance of the so-called Kulturkampf (high point in the 1870s), highlighting the struggle for a Catholic university

Podcast interview with Stephan Brakensiek, Dorothée Henschel, and Stephan Laux

As part of the special exhibition “Tell me more – Bilder erzählen Geschichte”, the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift Trier released a series of podcast episodes.

One such story revolves around the 1841 painting “Die Generalprobe” by Trier artist Friedrich Anton Wyttenbach (1812–1845). Stephan Brakensiek (art historian, University of Trier), Dorothée Henschel (Stadtmuseum Simeonstift), and Stephan Laux (historian, University of Trier) discuss different aspects of the painting. At the center is the interpretation that Wyttenbach intended to draw attention to the poverty of the Savoyards. The conversation explores arguments for and against this reading, along with the historical background.
