Dr. Anett Schmitz is an associate researcher in the field of Ethnology at the University of Trier. Her research focuses on international migration, forced migration and border studies, skilled migration (brain circulation), as well as themes such as inter- and transculturality, integration and participation, identity and belonging, diversity and culture, agency, and vulnerability. With her interdisciplinary and practice-oriented approach, she engages in the scientific exploration of current societal challenges and contributes to the development of sustainable strategies in migration and integration research.

Until June 2024, Dr. Schmitz worked as a research associate at the University of Trier. She then transitioned to her role as a consultant in the project “Recruitment of International Nursing Professionals” at the Caritas Association of the Diocese of Trier. Dr. Schmitz brings extensive experience in international migration and refugee studies and specializes in cultural anthropological methods. She has accompanied, conducted, and led numerous ethnographic and applied research projects.

Her fieldwork includes research in refugee shelters in Germany (2018–2024), the Moria camp on Lesbos, Greece (2020), Armenia (2022), Russia (2011), Kazakhstan (2016), and Luxembourg (2013–2016). She co-founded the working group “Migration, Agency, and Vulnerability” within the Refugee Research Network (together with Prof. Dr. Caroline Schmitt) and served as an ombudsperson for complaint management in refugee shelters in Rhineland-Palatinate from 2022 to 2024.

Through her combination of theoretical expertise and practical engagement, Dr. Schmitz makes a significant contribution to interdisciplinary migration research and the development of innovative approaches to integration, participation, and diversity.
