Proceedings of the meeting, May 21-22, 2012

Introduction

The International Polar Year (IPY) has brought new momentum to polar low research and a huge amount of new data on, and insight to, mesoscale processes in polar regions. The Oslo polar low workshop was the 12th workshop of the European Polar Low Working Group. This workshop summarized recent experimental, climatological, modeling, and remote sensing studies on polar lows and polar mesoscale processes.

Extended abstracts

  • ‘Missing’ polar lows enhance deep-water formation in the Nordic Seas (Condron/Renfrew)
  • Cyclone and mesocyclone tracking in the Antarctic region and southern polar ocean (Ebner/Heinemann)
  • Why was the March 16-17, 2008 polar low so difficult to forecast? (Engdahl/Kristjánsson/Spengler)
  • Synthetic Aperture Radar imaging of Polar Lows (Furevi/Noer/Röhrs)
  • A proposed high-resolution EPS for forecasting polar lows (Kristiansen/Bjørge/Iversen/Luijting/Noer)
  • Polar lows over the Nordic and Labrador Seas: Synoptic circulation patterns and associations with North Atlantic Winter Weather Regimes (Mallet/Claud/Cassou/Noer)
  • Numerical Study on a Polar Mesocyclone Development in a Shear Zone over the Japan Sea (Watanabe/Niino/Yanase)
  • Past and projected future changes of North Atlantic polar low frequency (Zahn/von Storch)
