Master program (LL.M.) for graduates in Law from foreign universities

Our Law Faculty offers a two-semester postgraduate program for foreign lawyers leading to the academic degree “Magister der Rechte - LL.M."

All courses are exclusively taught in GermanNo tuition fees will be levied.

The foreign degree has to equal the First Law Examination in Germany. This will be examined as soon as the applicant has sent application forms together with testified copies of his/her university examinations.

Our LL.M. - programme starts in every winter semester.

The deadline for application is 1 July

The application forms and all necessary information concerning language classes, orientation course and accommodation can be requested at our students`secretariat.

The LL.M. programme aims at the imparting of the fundamentals of German Law. Main focus of studies is German Civil Law and German Constitutional Law since these subjects will be examined in the final oral examination. Additionally a subject of choice - which has to be a subject of German national law, EU-Law or Private International Law - has to be taken and will be orally examined. In total, students are expected to participate in courses of at least 12 hours a week per semester. During the course of studies several examinations have to be passed as a prerequisite for admittance to the final LL.M. - examination:

During the first semester, students have to participate in a seminar and write a seminar thesis. At the end of the first semester, an exam in the lecture “Introduction to Civil Law I ” or “Introduction to Criminal Law I ” is scheduled. In the second semester a written test and a term paper either in Civil Law or Criminal Law have to be passed.

Students are granted admission to the final examination on having successfully passed the above mentioned intermediate exams. The final exam consists of a Master thesis and three oral exams (in Civil Law or Criminal Law, in Constitutional Law and in the optional subject).

The topic of the Master thesis has to be determined with a professor of our faculty who will be the student`s tutor during the work on the thesis.

After having successfully passed the thesis and the oral exams the academic degree of “Magister der Rechte - LL.M." is awarded.

Admission to the University of Trier is only possible if the applicant has sufficient knowledge of German which has to be proved by a DSH- certificate (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber)”.

The University of Trier offers language courses on an advanced level preparing for the DSH-exam. The decision whether an applicant is admitted to this language preparation course depends on the results of a placement test at the University of Trier.

At the time of application the candidate has to prove knowledge in German of at least medium level.
