The Department of Cognitive Psychology at Trier University offers a position for a

Research Assistant/ PhD Student (m/f/d)
EG 13 TV-L, 75 %, limited for a period of 3 years).

The position ideally starts 01. August 2025. The successful candidate can obtain a PhD in Psychology. The candidate will work in the DFG-funded project “The relation between learning and stimulus/response feature bindings” (principal investigators Christian Frings & Birte Moeller).

The project addresses the interface of action control mechanisms and processes of memory formation. Some widely recognized approaches to human action control emphasize the common coding of perception and action; e.g., the Theory of Event Coding (Hommel et al., 2001) and the Binding and Retrieval in Action Control framework (Frings et al., 2020). Here the foundational premise of initial binding followed by subsequent retrieval bears a striking resemblance to the fundamental components of memory theories—encoding and retrieval (Melton, 1963; Roediger & Abel, 2022). However, it is questionable how these theoretical constructs interconnect. The aim of the project is to bring light to this unsolved issue.

The project is situated at the Department of Cognitive Psychology at Trier University (lab of Prof. C. Frings; www.uni-trier.de/universitaet/fachbereiche-faecher/fachbereich-i/faecher-und-institute/psychologie/professuren/cognitive-psychology ), which offers an excellent, stimulating work environment and covers a broad range of topics and methods.

The position requires the planning and preparation of behavioral experiments, data analyses, publishing results in international journals, and presenting at national and international conferences. Applicants should have an interest in action control and learning and memory research. Experience with conducting experiments, statistical data analysis (e.g., SPSS, R), and ideally, programming skills (e.g., Python, Psychopy, E-Prime) are helpful but not essential. A university degree (master or diploma) in psychology as well as very good English skills are required. The candidate should have the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. A background in cognitive psychology would be helpful.
