Veranstaltungsbeschreibung

This course will help doctoral candidates to develop an understanding of the rhetorical, stylistic and structural features of academic writing in English and to use those features in the writing and/or revision of their own texts. Participants will learn about the requirements of PhD written genres (e.g. the thesis or research paper); the expectations of academic audiences; and writing conventions in the student’s own field. The course will also provide useful tools to support writing in English and aims to boost writing confidence through experimenting with productivity strategies. Many tasks will be focused on a specific section of the research article or thesis, such as the literature review, increasing understanding of the structural steps and features therein. The course covers five main areas:

  • Academic and disciplinary features in thesis and article writing
  • Boosting writing productivity and confidence
  • Structuring sections of the research paper or chapter of the thesis
  • Writing clearly and coherently
  • Discovering your voice and taking a stance

This course consists of 5 sessions and participants will work on their own writing or analyse texts from their field. In addition, participants will be given the opportunity to get personalised feedback on their written work.

The course is taught in English and participants should have B2 level English.
