In this subproject, led by Prof. Dr. Marc Oliver Rieger and Dr. Lei Shih, the cultural, political and economic consequences of globalization and its counter-movements will be examined. The project will be anchored in economics, but will draw on the East Asian and East European competencies of Sinology, Japanology and Slavonic Studies as well as on the expertise of colleagues from political science and law. Possible individual topics are, for example, the "New Silk Road" of China; the approximation and intensification of cultural differences between Europe and East Asia; challenges for democracy through new national forms of government based on control by "big data" and artificial intelligence; de-globalization tendencies following the COVID-19 crisis.
