The Digitale Erinnerungsatlas der Großregion is a product of the Arbeitskreises "Erinnerung in der Großregion". It is intended as a contribution to the field of Digital Humanities. Using interactive maps, the project aims to present sites of memory across Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Lorraine, and Wallonia, making them accessible for research and for the educational communication of the associated historical content.

To foster academic and interpersonal exchange within the Greater Region, the "Memory in the Greater Region" working group was founded in 2017 by faculty and students at the University of Trier; it received support from the University’s President, Prof. Dr. Michael Jäckel, and the Nikolaus Koch Foundation. Since August 2019, the group has operated as a registered association (*e.V.*), recognized as a non-profit organization for its work in preserving the memory of victims of persecution, war, and catastrophes.

The concept for the Atlas of Memory was developed by Maria Schulz, Lennard Schmidt, Kai Follmann, and Oksana Petruk under the supervision of Dr. J. Michael Schulz and Dr. Thomas Grotum within the Department of History at the University of Trier. Cartographic implementation was carried out by W. Stegmann. We also extend our thanks to the working group members for their varied support: Alisa Alić, Andreas Borsch, Tom Haas, Lena Haase, Franziska Leitzgen, Georg Mertes, Alexander Quack, Theresa Reichert, and Ksenia Stähle.

The Digitale Erinnerungsatlas der Großregion went online in 2021! This postponement was due to a positive development: during the 2019/20 winter semester, a course in the "Intermedia Design" program at Trier University of Applied Sciences — Marcus Haberkorn — was dedicated to further refining the prototype and optimizing its launch.

From May to December 2020, the project "Orte der Erinnerung" (Places of Remembrance) received funding—with a focus on the city of Trier and the administrative associations of Konz, Saarburg-Kell, and Schweich—through their respective "Partnerships for Democracy." These partnerships are part of the federal program "Demokratie leben!" (Living Democracy!) run by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. A follow-up project titled "Orte der Erinnerung II" was approved to run until September 2021.

The Präsidium der Universität Trier supports the internationalization of the "Buddeln und Bilden" (Digging and Learning) work camp, held at the memorial site of the former Gestapo camp "Neue Bremm" in Saarbrücken. A key focus is highlighting connections to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This funding was secured through a student initiative led by Oksana Petruk and Dorothea Seiler.

In October 2020, our student assistant Oksana Petruk was awarded the DAAD-Preis für ausländische Studierende an der Universität Trier ausgezeichnet.

TheDigitale Erinnerungsatlas der Großregion is currently under development and does not yet represent a final version. As of 2023, the majority of the listed sites of remembrance are located in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate; this distribution reflects the specific funding the project received in recent years. The next phase of expansion aims to add sites of remembrance in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg—with support from the University of Luxembourg. Additionally, existing entries for specific sites are being supplemented with further materials.
