JProf. Dr. David Frantz

David Frantz has been Head of Geoinformatics - Spatial Data Science since September 2021. His research focuses on the processing and analysis of large satellite image data and time series (big data) in topics such as land cover mapping, analysis of the distribution of building materials and forest remote sensing.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Udelhoven

Thomas Udelhoven is not only head of the Department of Environmental Remote Sensing & Geoinformatics and the Research Institute for Applied Geoinformatics, but is also Dean of Department VI. His research interests lie in the observation and modeling of spatio-temporal processes of the biosphere using remote sensing methods.

Hanna Parkhomchuk, M.A.

Hanna heads the secretariat and is the central point of contact for organizational and administrative matters. She is responsible for communication with students, staff and external partners as well as the administration of teaching and research documents. She supports the department in planning events, processing applications and maintaining documentation.

Research assistants

Marvin Bock, M.Sc.

Marvin is a doctoral student within the Rhineland-Palatinate research initiative. He is working on securing sustainable environmental-human relationships through the use of microsimulation methods. His project aims to develop innovative models that enable a better understanding and resolution of environmental conflicts between humans and nature.

Melanie Brauchler, M.Sc.

Mel is a PhD student with a focus on remote sensing and deep learning. Her research deals with Geographic Object Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) and the segmentation of remote sensing data. She is also interested in the use of OpenStreetMap (OSM) as a source of training data and its application in humanitarian projects to promote equal rights and aid for regions in need.

Dr. Henning Buddenbaum

In addition to his activities as Managing Director of the Research Institute for Applied Geoinformatics, Henning's research interests lie in hyperspectral remote sensing. For many years he has been organizing aerial surveys as well as laboratory and field surveys with the hyperspectral sensor HySpex.

Jaqueline Hoffmann, M.Sc.

Jaqueline Hoffmann has been working as a research assistant in environmental remote sensing and geoinformatics since April 2022. Since then, she has been teaching bachelor's and master's degree students in geography how to use geoinformation systems. As part of her dissertation, she is researching object recognition of plants in arable farming. To this end, she carries out UAV flights on agricultural land in the greater Trier area.

David Klehr, M.Sc

David Klehr has been a research assistant and PhD student in Geoinformatics - Spatial Data Science since November 2022. As part of his doctorate, he uses time series from environmental remote sensing satellites to detect and map different tree species in forests in Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition, he teaches students in the subjects Fundamentals of Geoinformatics and Fundamentals of Cartography.

Jari Mahler, M.Sc.

Jari is a researcher in the research project ELNAC (Enhanced Livelihoods and Natural Resource Management under Accelerated Climate Change: a large landscape social-ecological systems approach) and is doing his PhD on satellite-based characterization of land systems in Southern Africa. Special research interests are land surface phenology and machine learning.

Dr. Andreas Müller

is an expert in the fields of cartography, geographic information systems (GIS) and web GIS. His focus is on the development and application of geo-databases and geo-visualization. He also has extensive experience in programming to develop innovative solutions for geoscientific issues.

Sascha Nink

Sascha Nink, Dipl.-Geogr.

Sascha is a PhD student with a focus on remote sensing and the application of satellite data for environmental and forest sciences. In his research, he investigates the use of Landsat and Sentinel-2 data to continuously update forest type information in transboundary regions. His work contributes to the improvement of forest resource mapping and the use of remote sensing data for forest management and environmental monitoring.

Dr. Rebecca Retzlaff

Rebecca specializes in the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in various application areas. After completing precision farming projects, e.g. in hazelnut groves, she is part of the QualiSelect project, in which remote sensing data from individual vines is used to record the growth and health status in steep-slope viticulture and integrate it into a quality-oriented concept for selective mechanical harvesting.

Dr. Achim Röder

Achim is Academic Director in the Department of Environmental Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics. His research focuses on the mapping of environmental processes using remote sensing, with a regional focus on the Mediterranean region and Southwest Africa. He coordinates projects such as ‘The Future Okavango’ and ‘SASSCAL’, which are located at the interface of human-environment research.

Dr. Johannes Stoffels

Johannes works at the interface of remote sensing, geo-information systems and environmental research. His research focuses on the use of modern remote sensing data, for example for the characterization of forest disturbances, forest type mapping and the analysis of carbon storage in peatland forests.

Dr. Sascha Willmes

Sascha researches the climate and meteorology of the polar regions with a particular focus on the role of sea ice in the climate system. His expertise includes remote sensing, satellite meteorology and digital image processing, complemented by scientific programming and geoinformatics. By linking innovative geodata technologies with climatological issues, he contributes to the investigation of processes and changes in polar regions that are of crucial importance for the global climate.

Dipl.-Geogr. Wilfried Weber

Wilfried Weber is the IT system administrator for the team Geoinformatics - Spatial Data Science. His tasks include the installation, configuration, maintenance, monitoring and updating of servers, networks, operating systems and applications for various subjects in Department VI. It is his responsibility to ensure the reliable, secure and efficient operation of the systems.
