Studying Media and Communication
The digital transformation of media and public communication is among the central developments of our times. Research at the Department of Media Studies at Trier University is dedicated to the study of this transformation from different perspectives. We take pride in an interdisciplinary approach integrating in particular approaches coming from Computer linguistics and Digital humanities. In research and teaching, we focus especially on the digital transformation of public communication and how it affects journalism, political and strategic communication, and media reception. When studying structures and phenomena of communication, we seek to combine theory-oriented scientific reflection and the application of innovative methodology suited for digital communication practices. Methods used and taught at the department are diverse and include classic content analysis and surveys, experimental studies with eye-tracking, computational approaches (network analysis, automated content analysis) as well as qualitative analyses of visuals (such as memes or candidate posters), among others.
