BSc Environmental sciences

Environmental Biosciences

The Bachelor's program in Environmental Biosciences (with the abbreviation UBW from the German word Umweltbiowissenschaften) offers an environmentally focused biological education, providing knowledge in organismic and molecular biology, ecology and impact research.

Key Topics of the Program:

  • Biogeography (taxonomy, biodiversity, conservation)
  • Geobotany (ecosystem research)
  • Environmental Toxicology (molecular biology and interactions between environmental chemicals and biological systems)

Specialized Modules and Topics in Environmental Toxicology:

  • Principles of Environmental Toxicology
Basics of toxicology, mechanisms of action, cellular molecular biology

  • Fundamentals of Molecular Environmental Toxicology
DNA isolation, purification, and analysis through restriction digestion, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and electrophoresis

  • Applied Environmental Toxicology
Effects of stressors on cells, receptors, gene and protein expression, enzyme activities; generation of danger signals

  • Elective: Specialized Ecotoxicology I
    Practical experience with toxicological/ecotoxicological methods

Master’s Program (Building on the Bachelor’s Degree)

The focus option "Environmental and Immunotoxicology" is not currently available. Students of this Master's program will focus on "Biodiversity and Ecology"
