The Family of Man. Travels in Time and Space

Edward Steichen wanted The Family of Man to help create a more peaceful world. He understood photography as universal language. He thought his exhibition could educate people all over the world to make it a better place, to foster equality and peace. In the following years and decades Steichen was criticized for his approach (e.g. Barthes, Sekula) but in the last few years, scholars re-view The Family of Man for its humanistic intentions (e.g. Horkheimer, Azoulay). In a world of digital photography and hence virtual exposure of the audience to more photographs than ever, The Family of Man’s story offers an abundance of possibilities to investigate photojournalism, and its practices. The talk examines The Family of Man’s heritage to nowadays’ audience in terms of the power of political photography, ethical challenges in digital photography, and newer forms of photojournalistic activism.
