Allergy Group of the Permanent Senate Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area (MAK Commission) of the German Research Foundation (DFG)

In this group, substances are evaluated with regard to a (photo)sensitizing/allergenic effect after skin contact and/or inhalation. The evaluation is based on defined criteria (MAK and BAT values list 2024, DFG). The scientific secretariat of the “Allergy” working group compiles all available information on (photo)sensitizing/allergenic effects for joint discussion. Clinical data are used, supported by the results of animal experiments and non-animal methods. All data are checked for validity and then discussed and evaluated within the working group. Sensitizing substances are designated with “Sh” (skin-sensitizing substances), “Sa” (respiratory-sensitizing substances), “Sah” (skin- and respiratory-sensitizing substances) or “SP” (photosensitizing substances) in the MAK and BAT value list (MAK values: maximum workplace concentration; BAT values: biological work substance tolerance values). All assessments are justified in detail and the explanatory texts are published annually and are freely accessible. When new information becomes available, existing substantiations are reviewed and adjusted if necessary.
