Prof. Dr. Ben Marschke

Benjamin Marschke (PhD UCLA) is Professor of History at the California State Polytechnic University (“Cal Poly Humboldt”), in Arcata, California. In 2025 Marschke will be Vertretungsprofessor (Visiting Professor) for Prof. Damien Tricoire in Trier.
Marschke has held fellowships from the German Academic Exchange Program, the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, the Max Planck Institut für Geschichte, and the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies, among others.
Marschke is the author of Absolutely Pietist (2005), co-author of Experiencing the Thirty Years War (2013), and co-editor of The Holy Roman Empire, Reconsidered (2010), Kinship, Community, and Self (2015), Hallesches Waisenhaus und Berliner Hof (2017), Pietismus und Ökonomie (2021), Enlightenment at Court (2022), Healing and Harm (2023), and Religious Plurality at Princely Courts (2024). Since July 2024 Marschke is also co-editor-in-chief (with Jared Poley) of Central European History.
Marschke's monograph about political ceremony, gender/sexuality, luxury/money/work ethic, and intellectual/academic culture in the early eighteenth century, focusing on King Frederick William I of Prussia (1713-1740) is under contract with De Gruyter.
Marschke's next project is about the reading, reception, and retelling of news by an East-Elbian village pastor during the early Enlightenment.
