Edward Steichens The Bitter Years aus russischer Sicht:
Anmerkungen zu Ilf und Petrows USA-Reisetagebuch Das eingeschossige Amerika (1936)
Die deutsche Schriftstellerin und Büchner-Preisträgerin Felicitas Hoppe hat nicht nur mit ihren eigenen Werken Großes geleistet. Sie hat auch vor kurzem dafür gesorgt, dass das USA-Reisetagebuch Das eingeschossige Amerika (1936) der beiden russischen Satiriker Ilja Ilf und Jewgeni Petrow mit großem Erfolg neu in der Eichborn-Reihe „Die Andere Bibliothek“ aufgelegt wurde. Felicitas Hoppe wird in der Veranstaltung über die Besonderheiten dieser Reise und des Reisetagebuchs reden wie auch Auszüge daraus vorstellen. Die Eindrücke und Impulse der beiden russischen Schriftsteller sollen dann im Beziehung zu Edward Steichens Klassiker The Bitter Years gesetzt werden – Photos, die 1938 zuerst in New York gezeigt wurden und die Steichen mit einer ersten Veröffentlichung 1939 einem breiteren Publikum zuführte. Im Gespräch mit dem Leiter des Zentrums für Amerikastudien der Universität Trier, Gerd Hurm, wird Felicitas Hoppe die Eindrücke der beiden Satiriker auf die CNA-Photoausstellung im Wasserturm in Dudelange beziehen.
Die Parallelen sind markant, auch wenn der Blick ein anderer ist: in der Ausstellung befindet sich etwa ein Photo von Dorothea Lange, der vielleicht wichtigsten amerikanischen Photographin des 20. Jahrhunderts, auf dem zwei schwer bepackte Tramps auf staubiger Straße zu sehen sind, direkt daneben ein Plakat, das für die Leichtigkeit modernen Reisens wirbt: „Next Time Try the Train. Relax.“ Ironische Widersprüche wie diese sowie deren künstlerische Umsetzung werden Gegenstand des Gedankenaustausches sein: eine kreative, imaginative Reise in die amerikanischen 30er Jahre, die für die Besucher die Kraft und Faszination der Ausstellung Steichens frisch aufleben lassen wird. Oder augenzwinkernd mit Ilf und Petrow gesprochen: „Wäre Amerika sowjetisch, dann wäre es das Paradies.“

The international symposium "New Perspectives on Edward Steichen's The Bitter Years" with scholars from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Germany explores central issues in American studies in experimental fashion. The symposium connects on-site teaching and student-based research, practical didactics and innovative scholarship in new ways. The epochal photo exhibition, Edward Steichen's 1962 MoMA project The Bitter Years, since 2012 on permanent display at the CNA in Dudelange, Luxembourg, will be contextualized individually by different cultural studies classes on American road movies, on the American West, and on fashioning identities in the context of the American Dream. The symposium connects and merges different narratives and perspectives in order to gain new insights into the continued fascination with Edward Steichen's The Bitter Years.

Edward Steichen’s famous 1962 exhibition of Depression-era photographs, The Bitter Years, is on one level a look backward to a time of hardship and suffering that seemed unprecedented for American society. In this vein, Steichen’s exhibition can be read as a narrative of isolation, hunger, and homelessness, relieved by moments of community and the will to survive, a narrative that can be applied to 1930s Europe as well. But what made these pictures seem relevant to the 1960s makes them seem even more relevant to our own times, when images of global poverty, nomadic homelessness, and acute hunger and deprivation haunt the media on a daily basis. This lecture will discuss The Bitter Years alongside the work of contemporary social documentary photographers like James Nachtwey, Sebastiao Salgado, and Steve McCurry. The general question addressed is: What can an aesthetic medium do in times of disaster, how can it function, to ameliorate the human condition?
