The International History Team of Trier University is pleased to announce that the mini series „Die Reise der Menschheit“ (Terra X, moderated by Dirk Steffens) was awarded the German Television Prize 2019 in the category Best Multipart-Documentary. Ursula Lehmkuhl supported the film team writing the script for the third part of the mini-serie and she stood herself in front of the camera explaining the 19th century history of German emigration to the United States and the German Emigrant Letter collection of the Research Library Gotha. 

The 20th award ceremony of the German Television Prize took place on 31 January in Düsseldorf's Rheinterrasse and was broadcast live on www.wdr.de and as a recording in One.

In der Schriftenreihe der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb) erschien von Prof. Dr. Ursula Lehmkuhl am 29.06.2018 der "Länderbericht Kanada".

Unter Mitarbeit der Herausgeberin veranstaltete die bpb im Medienzentrum Bonn zusätzlich zur Publikation eine auf Video aufgezeichnete Buchvorstellung. Das komplette fast zweistündige Event mit Interviews, Publikumsfragen und informativen Beiträgen gibt es hier als Livestream zu sehen.

Begleitend zur Erscheinung des Länderberichts Kanada veröffentlichte die Pressestelle der Universität Trier am 25.07.2018 unter dem Titel "Oh wie schön ist Kanada" ein Interview mit der Kanada-Expertin Ursula Lehmkuhl und sprach mit ihr über Migrationspolitik und ihren gemeinsam mit der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung herausgegeben Länderbericht.

Mehr zum Thema Migration aus historischer Sicht bietet die dreiteilige Terra X Miniserie "Reise der Menschheit", welche kostenfrei in der ZDF-Mediathek zur Verfügung steht.

The essays collected in this volume address a wide spectrum of issues connected to traumatic events and experiences, be they of personal, collective, national or global scale. They are complemented by poetic contemplations on trauma, which set the tone for the following scholarly investigations. The thematic scope of the collection encompasses psychological, sociological and political approaches to trauma, examples of ethnic and indigenous traumatizations, literary, cultural and visual manifestations of trauma or the medialization of trauma in the museum. As a result of the comparative, and in some cases cross-hermeneutic, design of the volume with German scholars looking at Canadian and Canadian scholars looking at German / European examples of traumatization, transatlantic perspectives on the problems at stake are opened.

The interdisciplinary and international visiting professorship Women's and Gender Studies Rhineland-Palatinate has been funded by the Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Culture of Rhineland-Palatinate since 2001. It is staffed by an internationally renowned scientist every semester and rotates between the universities in Rhineland-Palatinate.

As part of the visiting professorship, PD Dr. Gabriele Dietze offered an exercise and a workshop on her current research project for the summer semester 2018. She also opened this year's colloquium of the Center for Postcolonial and Gender Studiesat the University of Tier (21-22 June 2018) with a public lecture. Further information...

Nach einer positiven Zwischenevaluation des Internationalen Graduiertenkollegs "Diversity: Mediating Difference in Transcultural Spaces" hat der DFG-Senat der Weiterförderung der kanadisch-deutschen Kooperation in der Doktorandenausbildung zugestimmt. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass die Universität Trier für weitere 4,5 Jahre beim Aufbau innovativer Strukturen für die internationale Doktorandenausbildung unterstützt wird.

Der kanadische Sprecher des Internationalen Graduiertenkollegs "Diversity: Mediating Difference in Transcultural Spaces" hat aus den Händen des deutschen Konsuls in Montreal das Bundesverdienstkreuz erhalten. Laurence McFalls gehört zu den Pionieren der DDR-Forschung in Nordamerika und wurde damit für seine außergewöhnlichen Verdienste um die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Austauschs zwischen Nordamerika und Europa, insbesondere zwischen Kanada und Deutschland geehrt. Das gesamte Team der Internationalen Geschichte gratuliert ganz herzlich zu dieser Auszeichnung.

The second volume, Spaces of Difference: Conflicts and Cohabitation, based on the IRTG Diversity’s International Conference in Montréal (2014), has just been published in February 2016. Spaces of Difference discusses the construction of transcultural spaces and the representation and negotiation of diversity through the analytical lenses of narratives, practices and politics of diversity. The multi-disciplinary contributions to this volume address four broader research fields: (1) the entangled and contested (hi)stories of diversity; (2) migration and the creation of transcultural spaces; (3) practices and politics of belonging; and (4) the dynamics of confrontation and cohabitation in spaces of difference. The research presented in this volume combines approaches from history, political science, sociology, migration studies and literature.

The first volume of the IRTG Diversity’s publication series, the essay collection Of ‘Contact Zones’ and ‘Liminal Spaces’: Mapping the Everyday Life of Cultural Translation (Lehmkuhl, Lüsebrink, McFalls, eds.) was published with Waxmann (Münster / New York) in 2015. The book is based on the IRTG Diversity’s 2014 lecture series and represents the work of the IRTG Diversity in many ways: The lecture series was an example of true transatlantic scholarly dialogue, with talks being given on either side of the Atlantic, streamed live to Trier, Montréal and Saarbrücken, and discussed in videoconferences. The contributors include renowned scholars from various fields such as sociology, literary studies, geocriticism, and anthropology. The book features essays in the IRTG’s three official languages, English, French, and German. Finally, Of ‘Contact Zones’ and ‘Liminal Spaces’ includes a short introductory text on the IRTG Diversity’s general research agenda and research objectives.

At the Dies Academicus of Trier University 2015 Dr. Hanno Scheerer received the best dissertation award of the Trier Chamber of Industry and Commerce for his "summa cum laude" dissertation "Settlers, Surveyors, Speculators, and the State: Struggles for Control over Land in Ohio's Virginia Military District, 1776 - 1810" (2014). The dissertation was supervised by Prof. Dr. Ursula Lehmkuhl (Trier).

Wir gratulieren Dr. Eva Bischoff zu dem renommierten Post-Doc-Stipendium der Martin Buber Society of Fellows an der Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Frau Bischoff wird dort vom 1. Oktober 2013 bis zum 30. September 2014 die Forschungsarbeiten an ihrer Habilitationsschrift zur Geschichte der Quaker Settlers in Tasmanien fortsetzen.

Wir gratulieren Frau Dr. Eva Bischoff zu ihrem Post-Doc Stipendium mit dem Schwerpunkt Kololnialismus und Kolonialgeschichte am Deutschen Historischen Institut London. Frau Bischoff wird dort vom 1.4. bis 30.9.2013 Forschungsarbeiten für ihre Habilitationsschrift zu den Quaker Settlers in Tasmanien durchführen. 

Mit einem table ronde unter dem Titel 'Herméneutique croisée: Penser, Écrire, Traduire (dans) les espaces transculturels' wurde die IRTG Diversity am Dienstag, den 18 Juni 2013, an der Universität Montreal präsentiert und eröffnet. Weitere Informationen in französischer Sprache finden Sie hier.

Mit einem Festvortrag von Prof. Dr. Dan Diner (linkes Bild) und der Vorstellung der Stipendiat_Innen (rechtes Bild) wurde das erste deutsch-kanadische Graduiertenkolleg in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften, das IGK "Diversity: Mediating Difference in Transcultural Spaces", an der Universität Trier feierlich eröffnet.

Im Rahmen dieser deutsch-kanadischen Kooperation arbeiten die Universität Trier, die Universität des Saarlandes und die Université de Montréal zusammen, um neue Formen der internationalen Doktorandenausbildung zu etablieren.

The DFG research group on the history of "Settler Imperialism in North America and Australia" organizes a workshop which will bring together an international group of scholars discussing the question: What are the economic, political and cultural conditions of settler violence at the frontier?
