Prof. Dr. Ursula Lehmkuhl

Ursula Lehmkuhlstudied History, French, and Comparative Literature at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the University of Siegen, where she graduated with an M.A. in History in 1985. She earned her doctorate (Dr. phil.) in Modern History in 1990 with a thesis on "Canada’s Overture to Asia: The Colombo Plan, the New Commonwealth, and the Reconstruction of the Sterling Area, 1947-1952". From 1993 to 1996, she was Assistant Professor of International Relations at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, where, in 1997, she finished her post-doctoral thesis (Habilitation), entitled "Pax Anglo-Americana: Soft Power and Anglo-American Policy in Asia and the Far East during the 1950s". In 1998, she was appointed Full Professor of North American History at the University of Erfurt, where she also acted as Vice President for Research and International Relations from 2000 to 2002. In 2002, she was invited to become Chair of the History Department of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies, Freie Universität Berlin. At Freie Universität, she headed the history department for eight consecutive years, and co-directed (2006-2010, in cooperation with Thomas Risse) the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 700 "Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood" (Governance in Räumen begrenzter Staatlichkeit). From 2007 to 2010, Professor Lehmkuhl also served as First Vice President, and represented the university as Acting President in 2010. Since October 2010, she has been Professor of International History at the University of Trier's newly established chair. In cooperation with the Université de Montréal and the Saarland University she has established an International Research Training Group (IRTG) on "Diversity: Mediating Difference in Transcultural Spaces". The IRTG’s academic program will start in April 2013.

Professor Lehmkuhl's teaching and research fields include American and British Social and Cultural History of the 19th and 20th century, the History of International Relations during the 20th century, Canadian and American History, as well as Colonial, Atlantic, and Transatlantic History.
