2019: Translating Diversity: Concepts, Practices, and Politics, Münster: Waxmann Verlag (co-edited with Lutz Schowalter).

This volume invites the reader to participate in a discussion about how to conceptualize the mediation of difference in localities of diversity and transcultural spaces via the analytical lenses of ‘translation’ as a social practice. The contributions to the volume explore, discuss, and theorize ‘translation’ as a pre-institutionalized strategy of conflict resolution and conflict transformation as well as a driving force of cultural and social change and as a means of knowledge production. In addition to mistranslations and untranslatabilities, the authors analyze the politics of literary translation and translation as research-creation.

2020: 150 Years of Canada: Grappling with Diversity since 1867 (Münster: Waxmann Verlag) (co-edited with Elisabeth Tutschek)
On July 1, 2017, Canada celebrated the 150th anniversary of Confederation. The nation-wide festivities prompted ambiguous reactions and contradictory responses since they officially proclaimed to celebrate “what it means to be Canadian. “Canada 150’s” focus on identity. The contributions touch upon issues of Canada’s French and English dualism; of its settler colonial past and present and the role of Indigenous Peoples in Canada’s identity narrative; of Canada’s religious, cultural, ethnic and racial diversity; and of the challenge of forging a “Canadian” identity.

2016: Spaces of Difference: Conflicts and Cohabitation, Münster: Waxmann Verlag (co-edited with Hans-Jürgen Lüsebrink and Laurence McFalls).

Spaces of Difference discusses the construction of transcultural spaces and the representation and negotiation of diversity through the analytical lenses of narratives, practices and politics of diversity. The multi-disciplinary contributions to this volume address four broader research fields: (1) the entangled and contested (hi)stories of diversity; (2) migration and the creation of transcultural spaces; (3) practices and politics of belonging; and (4) the dynamics of confrontation and cohabitation in spaces of difference. The research presented in this volume combines approaches from history, political science, sociology, migration studies and literature.

2015: Of ‘Contact Zones’ and ‘Liminal Spaces’: Mapping the Everyday Life of Cultural Translation, Münster; Waxmann Verlag (co-edited with Hans-Jürgen Lüsebrink and Laurence McFalls).

The book is based on the IRTG Diversity’s 2014 lecture series and represents the work of the IRTG Diversity in many ways: The lecture series was an example of true transatlantic scholarly dialogue, with talks being given on either side of the Atlantic, streamed live to Trier, Montréal and Saarbrücken, and discussed in videoconferences. The contributors include renowned scholars from various fields such as sociology, literary studies, geocriticism, and anthropology. The book features essays in the IRTG’s three official languages, English, French, and German. Finally, Of ‘Contact Zones’ and ‘Liminal Spaces’ includes a short introductory text on the IRTG Diversity’s general research agenda and research objectives.

2014: Provincializing the United States: Colonialism, Decolonization, and (Post)Colonial Governance in Transnational Perspective, Heidelberg: Winter Verlag (co-edited with Eva Bischoff and Norbert Finzsch).

This volume submits a theoretically reflected and empirically saturated contribution to the debate about transnationalizing U.S. history. Its contributions explore U.S. history from the margins, discussing topics as diverse as U.S. settler imperialism, technological and intellectual networks, Native American history, or African-American missionaries. They open up new, post-colonial perspectives on North American history, thereby provincializing the United States.
