Michael Stubbs has been Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Trier, Germany, since 1990. He was previously Professor of English in Education, Institute of Education, University of London (1985-90) and Lecturer in Linguistics, University of Nottingham, UK (1974-85).
Other posts and offices include Honorary Senior Research Fellow, University of Birmingham, UK (1994-99), Chair of BAAL (British Association for Applied Linguistics, 1988-91), member of the National Curriculum English Working Group [Cox Committee] (1988-89), and Visiting Professor, University of Tübingen, Germany (1985). He has also lectured in Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, USA, Yemen, and several European countries, most recently Italy, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
He has published around 50 articles in books and refereed journals (including Applied Linguistics, Functions of Language, International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, Journal of Pragmatics, Language and Education, Language and Literature and Text), and around 50 book reviews in journals (including Journal of Child Language, Language, Language in Society and Linguistics). His books have been translated into Catalan, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.
He has been on the editorial board of several journals: Applied Linguistics, Functions of Language, International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, Linguistics and Education and Text and Talk.
He edited the Corpus Linguistics section of the Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics, which was published in 2012 by Wiley-Blackwell as a ten-volume print edition and also as an electronic reference work with around 1,200 articles. The Corpus Linguistics section contains around 25 articles on the contribution of corpus data and methods to topics such as business language, deaf signing, English for academic purposes, and forensic linguistics, plus 10 biographical articles on major figures in the field.
He retired in 2013 but plans to continue writing about phraseology and corpus stylistics.
