Supervisors

QZP workshop “Doctorates well supervised”

Since 2012, the member universities of the Quality Circle for the Doctorate have been offering an annual one-and-a-half-day or two-day workshop on doctoral supervision in German. This offer is exclusively for supervisors at universities that are members of the QZP graduate institutions (usually 2-3 participants from each member university).

The next workshop will take place on February 26–27, 2026 (Thu./Fri.) at the TU Darmstadt City Center Campus.

If you are interested, please send an email to gut@uni-trier.de as soon as possible. The registration deadline is Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

Doctoral programs are a special form of academic examination preceded by several years of research. The success of doctoral programs depends not only on whether the PhD candidates are suitable and sufficiently motivated for this research work. Rather, good supervision by the primary supervisor provides the support that can often make the difference between success and failure.

But what criteria define good doctoral supervision? What constitutes an optimal relationship between PhD candidates and supervisors? What needs to be considered during the supervision process? What criteria can or should a potential supervisor use to decide whether or not to accept a request for supervision from someone interested in pursuing a doctoral degree? These are just some of the questions that arise in connection with the supervision of the multifaceted doctoral (examination) process.

In the recent debate initiated by the German Council of Science and Humanities and the German Rectors' Conference on the quality and professionalization of doctoral supervision, workshops for self-reflection and joint training of dissertation supervisors play a central role. The Quality Circle for Doctoral Studies (QZP), a cross-disciplinary and cross-location network, is offering a two-day workshop on doctoral supervision for the thirteenth time, aimed in particular at scientists with relatively little experience in supervision and newly appointed professors.

The workshop aims to provide participants with tools and opportunities for intensive collegial exchange of experiences so that they can deal with questions and problems arising in connection with the supervision of doctoral candidates as efficiently and professionally as possible in the future. After all, optimal research results and fruitful discussions can only be achieved if the relationship between supervisors and doctoral candidates is positive.

Contents of the workshop

  • International and national developments in doctoral supervision
  • Mutual expectations in the supervisory relationship
  • Phases of doctoral studies and their challenges
  • Roles of supervisors in the doctoral process
  • Legal issues in doctoral supervision
  • Identifying and solving problems
  • Collegial exchange of experiences

  • Dr. Theo Jäger, CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security
