Workshop - Family relations in Euripides' Medea

Euripides’ Medea is one of the most famous and powerful Greek tragedies, with an enormous legacy within both ancient literature and modern culture. This workshop will consider the play in terms of the central theme of family and family relations. Almost every figure within the play is motivated by family, and yet this key institution of Greek life provokes some of the most infamous crimes of classical literature. The format of this workshop is closely modelled on that of the tutorials given at the University of Oxford; you will be given a specific essay question and a reading list, in response to which you will write a relatively short paper in English. This paper will receive careful (and friendly!) marking and comments, and the issues raised by your essays will form the focus of discussion in the workshop itself. The focus is on you; this workshop is an opportunity to experiment with and expand upon your views, your questions and your words!
