The Master in Economics is a comprehensive full-time program that combines application and research oriented courses and has a special emphasis on empirical methods.
In addition to a thorough training in economic theory and econometrics, you can – depending on your specialization or major – attend a varying number of courses offered, e.g., by the Business Department, the Political Science Department or the Sociology Department. The Master in Economics has a highly flexible curriculum and qualifies for both a career in practice and in academia.
Why studying Economics (M.Sc.) at Trier University?
- Small study groups and comprehensive study support
- Attractive job opportunities in a large variety of industries and sectors
- Wide range of specializations and elective courses
- Double Degree Option, either at University of Warsaw or University of Bergamo
- Financial market place Luxembourg in close proximity
Course content
The curriculum consists of (1) compulsory modules, (2) specialization modules, and (3) elective modules. It concludes with a Master Thesis.
The compulsory modules provide an introduction to advanced economic theories in macro- and microeconomics, as well as to academic research.
In the specialization modules (second and third semester), students shape their profiles by choosing courses from the six areas mentioned above. If courses amounting to at least 30 CPs are taken, the corresponding specialization is noted on the master's certificate.
The elective modules are even more flexible and include all specialization moduls and courses of other departments so that it is possible to develop an attractive and specific profile for the job market.

Internships & abroad
The topic of Economics holds significant practical importance, offering the opportunity for integrating company internships into the study program. These internships can be conducted within various sectors including corporate, non-profit, or governmental organizations. Find here the department's Internship Agreement.
Students also have the option to spend one or two semesters abroad during their Master's studies. This opportunity enables them to study at one of Trier University's partner universities. Additionally, the Economics program of Trier University provides the option of a double master. In this case, students spend two semesters in Trier and two semesters in Bergamo or Warshaw where they obtain their second master degree after a successful master thesis.
Prerequisites
Proof of a Bachelor's degree with a grade of 2.9 or better in an economics degree program or with a grade of 2.5 or better in another degree program that comprises at least 60 CP (one third of the graded coursework) from the fields of economics, mathematics and/or statistics. The examination board determines on a case-by-case basis whether the required credits in economics, mathematics, and/or statistics meet the necessary criteria.
