History

The roots of the Centre for Canadian Studies go back to 1976. It emerged from an interdisciplinary working group on the general research topic of "Canada". Thanks to the successful cooperation between the departments involved, this working group later developed into the research centre "Centre for Canadian Studies" (ZKS). In 1996, the Centre was given the status of a central academic institution at Trier University.

Historical, sociological and ethnological, economic and comparative law as well as cultural and landscape geography research are part of the academic work at the Centre for Canadian Studies. The focus is on Anglo-Canadian literary studies and French-Canadian linguistics.

The teaching programme is supplemented by author readings, exhibitions, guest lectures by national and international academics and interdisciplinary symposia. The close cooperation between Canada and the Centre for Canadian Studies is based on the partnership agreement concluded in 1985 with the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, and the partnership agreement concluded in 1997 with the University of Ottawa, Ontario.
