The term “stress” is an omnipresent part of our everyday language: we feel stressed, we suffer from too much stress, we urgently need to do something about our stress. Although stress, like burnout, is not a diagnosable illness, psychosocial stress is a significant risk factor for the development and maintenance of numerous mental, psychosomatic and physical illnesses. The World Health Organization rates stress as “one of the greatest health threats of the 21st century”. This guide is aimed at anyone who suffers from stress and wants to manage it successfully. It provides those affected and their families with answers to basic questions: What actually is stress? How does stress arise? What are the effects of stress? How can inadequately managed stress seriously affect my health? This is followed by an individual analysis of stress factors, stress reactions and protective resources with numerous case studies from those affected. Finally, the focus is on scientifically proven exercises and techniques that start at different points: from improving the ability to regenerate to actively changing stress triggers and high demands to easy-to-learn relaxation techniques. The exercises developed for this purpose can be selected individually and as required and integrated into everyday life. Exercise questions and worksheets make it easier to actively work on successful stress management, which can also protect against future stress in professional and private life in the sense of prevention.
