Cities can be understood as always in the (re)making. While built infrastructure such as roads and buildings provide more permanent structures and locked-in spaces, they are yet also subject to renegotiations and change. Together with students from the University of Luxembourg, our master students in human geography explored some of these aspects with a focus on vacancies in retail and gastronomy and the challenges and potential they provide to urban transformation processes. Sites included vacant department stores in the inner city as well as malls such as Treviris Passage but also smaller lots. Challenges relate to high rental prices, restricted availability of larger floor areas as well as ownership structures.
