This page contains a lot of important information and frequently asked questions that are relevant to the subject of Computational Linguistics and Digital Humanities.
Start of Study
Prior knowledge and prerequisites
Language, Technology, Media: This Bachelor's degree programme is in German and is NC-free. No programming skills are required.
Digital Humanities: This Master's degree programme is in German and is NC-free. The admission requirements are as follows:
‘Proof of a Bachelor's degree in humanities or computer science (acquisition of at least 180 ECTS credits) or a Bachelor's degree that combines humanities and computer science content (acquisition of at least 40 ECTS credits in each of the two areas) or an equivalent degree at a domestic or foreign university.’ (PO-Version 2014, §2)
No programming knowledge is required, but an affinity for computer science topics is recommended, as the degree programme has some computer science content.
Natural Language Processing: This Master's degree programme is taught in English and is NC-free. The admission requirements are as follows:
'Bachelor's degree in a subject-relevant degree programme. Relevance to the subject is given if at least 30 credit points in computational linguistics, linguistics or computer science have been acquired in the degree programme. The decision on subject relevance is made by the examination board on a case-by-case basis.' In addition, ‘proof of knowledge of the English language in accordance with §4 paragraph 2 of the enrolment regulations of Trier University in the currently valid version’ is required. Previous knowledge of programming is useful but not absolutely necessary.
Platforms
The StudIP and Moodle platforms are used in our degree programmes.
Other important platforms for studying at Trier University are the course planning system PORTA and the cloud service Seafile, which provides all students with 20GB of storage space.
You can log in to all these platforms with your ZIMK ID and the corresponding password.
Programming languages
Our degree programmes mainly use the Python programming language. R and Java are also used in some courses. The student council has put together an overview of suitable programmes.
Consultation hours
Consultation hours with lecturers are usually arranged via StudIP. To do this, the lecturer must select the ‘Terminvergabe’ tab on their StudIP profile. The ‘+’ on the right-hand side can be used to book one of the specified appointments.
If the appointment system is not set up on StudIP, please contact the lecturer in person or by email.

Examination Regulations

Registration and Deregistration for Examinations
Students must always register for examinations themselves via PORTA. The registration period for written and oral exams is typically available six to four weeks before the exam date. The deregistration period usually ends two weeks before the exam. For written assignments such as term papers or portfolios, registration is often possible up until the submission deadline.

Final Thesis
- General Information
- Processing time: 4 months (Bachelor), 6 months (Master)
- Length: Highly variable, depending on the chosen topic and type of presentation; recommended:
- Bachelor thesis: 30 +/- 15 pages
- Master thesis: 60 +/- 30 pages (always in consultation with the first supervisor)
- Registration: Information on registering the thesis can be found at the HPA (University Examination Office).
- Submission: The thesis must be bound and submitted in triplicate to the HPA mailbox in the V-building.
- The Bachelor/Master Examination Regulations (APO) contain the regulations for theses under APO §15.

- Topic Change:
"The candidate may only return a topic once and only within the first two weeks of the processing time. In this case, the new topic must be assigned within four weeks." APO §15(3)

Ressources
PC-Pool
The PC pool B329 is available to students of our subject Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for studying and staying. The PCs are shut down at 10 pm. To gain access to the room, you must enter a five-digit code here once (enter your ZIMK ID as the user name). You can then hold your tunic up to the numpad next to the door, enter your personalised code and open the door after confirming the code.
