Motion Tracker

  • Motion Tracking enables high-precision measurement of human movement and spatial behavior in real time.
  • Using electromagnetic tracking technology, the system captures six degrees of freedom: position (x, y, z) and orientation (azimuth, elevation, roll).
  • The setup is ideally suited for research on action control, perception, attention and human-environment interaction.
  • Motion data can be synchronized with other modalities (e.g., EEG, fNIRS, eye-tracking, or tES) for multimodal analysis.

 Lab equipment/ Motion tracking system:

  • Polhemus VIPER 16 Motion Tracking System
    • electromagnetic tracking with up to 16 sensors and 4 sources
    • sampling rate up to 960 Hz (≈ 1 ms latency)
    • accuracy: ~0.4 mm (position), 0.1° (orientation)
    • tracking range: approx. 0.75 m radius per source (expandable with multiple sources)
    • Fly True Technology (FTT®) for real-time correction of magnetic distortions
  • Data interfaces: USB 2.0 / RS-422, external synchronization for integration with physiological and behavioral recording systems (PsychoPy)
  • Control & software:
    • VIPER Command Manager for configuration and visualization
    • compatible with MATLAB and Python analysis pipelines
  • Typical use cases:
    • studies on reach and grasp movements, and spatial interaction
    • motor learning, movements and actions
