  • Since 2015: Lecturer, Environmental Science, School of Tourism and Land Resource, Chongqing Technology and Business University.
  • 2017-2019: Postdoc at the Soil Science Department, Geography / Geosciences of the University of Trier, Prof. Sören Thiele-Bruhn. Interacting retardation and transport of manure-derived mobile organic matters and micropollutants in soils.

Ongoing research

  • The interacting retardation and transport of manure-derived mobile organic matter (MOMM) and micropollutants (sulfadiazine, caffeine and atenolol) in 5 selected soils of different properties (e.g. pH and SOM contents). Batch sorption experiments and flow through experiments are conducted to study the sorption strength and transport dynamics of MOMM in combination of micropollutants in the soils.
  • Variations of soil physical characteristics (especially soil structure and pore distributions) caused by the seasonal intense dry-wet cycles in the Water Level Fluctuation Zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China as well as their potential effects on the release of soil colloid and the transport of heavy metals.

Analysis and fate of secondary plant metabolites generated and released by aromatic plants in plant/soil systems

Prof. Dr. Zachary Getenga (Machakos University, Machakos, Kenya) and Dr. Victor Shikuku (Kaimosi Friends University College, Nairobi, Kenya) worked as guest scientists with Prof. Dr. Sören Thiele-Bruhn at the Soil Science department of the University of Trier from July 1st to December 31st, 2019.

Topic of the ongoing cooperative research is the fate of plant derived, aromatic oils in soils. Studies were conducted on the analytical determination of highly volatile aromatic oils such as thymol and carvacrol in soil, their sorption thermodynamics and kinetics. This work will be completed by research on degradation of the chemicals in soil and the abundance and contents of aromatic oils in plant/soil systems under field conditions.

Prof. Dr. Getenga and Dr. Shikuku were funded as research fellows by the Humboldt foundation.
